Public bug reported:
I played around with my grub-configuration ( /etc/grub.d/ ) - very
stupid, I know - and broke it completely. See here, "alloc magic is
broken" http://askubuntu.com/questions/183601/cant-boot-no-grub-alloc-
magic-is-broken.
I then started to reinstall grub from a live CD (more or less with sudo
grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda ).
This did not change anything and after playing around a while I checked the
grub.conf and saw that the old error still remained.
It turned out that though reinstalling it would use the old configuration (the
broken one.)
I'd suggest grub-install to ask the user whether to override or to back
it up. (and .bak to the files does NOT work)
