Sean Kibler is right!  Removeing e1000 and e1000e modules works.

sudo modprobe -r e1000
sudo modprobe -r e1000e

Had the problem running:

Linux sittra 3.2.0-30-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 24 16:52:48 UTC
2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

on a Lenovo T61p.
