It seems that with the more recent Unity updates, the Home Lense (if
that's correct phrase) takes longer to display the the recently used
apps. The recently used documents show up right away, however.

It used to be that both the apps and the docs were displayed pretty much
right away after logging in. Now it takes around 30sec or more.
