As you mentioned yourself you changed settings yourself so its probably
not Ubuntu's fault. I think you will be able to get back to normal by
running this command in a terminal (considering you are using Ubuntu
12.04 and not 12.10)
$ unity --reset
** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu)
Status: New => Incomplete
