You are right.  The problem is caused by the by my  desktop environment,
Trinity.  Under gnome inkscape runs fine.

I discovered that Trinity sets LD_PRELOAD to its own gtk2 library
(/opt/trinity/lib/kgtk/libkgtk2.so).  When I unset this environment
variable I can use inkscape even under Trinity.  Thanks for the tip.
