You're right, it's not vlc itself. :) The 'Gtk-CRITICAL **:
IA__gtk_widget_style_get: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed"'
problem is in liboverlay-scrollbars, and it's hitting apps that use qt4.
It's bug 1005677, and the workaround is to set
LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0
either in the shell before your commands, or in /etc/enviroment until
this is fixed. Thanks!
