This bug can be closed. The answer in #5 is the correct answer to this
bug. SmartPM has been fased out in favor of APT which works a bit
better. (not perfect, still breaks Ubuntu Software Center for the end
user, but that's a different bug).
I changed the bug to Fix Relased as APT is the fix.
