So additionally I would have to first uninstall the current drivers and then
reinstall them. Not to mention the risk to screw something up and stay without
connection for ages until I fix what I screwed up."

For almost the same reason. Slightly less complicated and risky, I guess, but
still not just as simple as installing a package, rebooting, trying it, and
then rebooting again to normal. Or is it?
It is. If you read the article previously mentioned about installing the
mainline kernel, one would find this.
