FYI, 
I'm getting VERY similar errors on my raspberry pi with an 
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:8176 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n 
WLAN Adapter
To me this sounds as if the "ath" driver is not at fault, but something else. 
The fact that the older laptop DOES suffer this problem and the newer one not, 
may implicate slower processors, and that in turn correlates nicely with that 
the rpi has this problem.
