When I rebooted to try to install Ubuntu again and I got to the "Installation type" window, the USB key had only /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 was gone just like I did previous to reboot. So it looks like the partitioning scheme I selected worked but the installer did not proceed with installation. See attached screenshot.
