Several things should make this better today:
1) (And I believe this was true when you filed this bug?) The name fades out as
it approaches the logo. So there's not true visual overlap.
2) The font used for the user name is smaller in 12.10
3) The login box is wider for 12.10
4) The logo is not shown by default in 12.10, until you install a new session
like xubuntu or whatever
But the fading-out-as-you-approach-the-logo is intentional (per the
design team). But the other changes should make longer names more
usable.
