The bisect pointed to the following commit as the first bad one:
commit d3a67dbe37d32ba10da0de2f14151d606856e5d2
Author: Leann Ogasawara <[email protected]>
Date: Thu Aug 16 09:01:00 2012 -0700

UBUNTU: Ubuntu-3.5.0-11.11

This indicates the bug is due to a config file change in 3.5.0-11.11. The one
that sticks out is:
[Config] enable CONFIG_X86_X32=y

I'll build a test kernel with that option disabled.
