I'd also strongly second Brad's suggestion of trying a powered hub. A USB port can only supply a limited amount of power, so if you have a hub with no external power source and several bus-powered devices connected to it there's a strong chance that you could end up with power spikes that exceed what the USB port is capable of supplying.
