I have the same problem. My system has an on-board soundcard (which I'd like to use with Skype), a PCI-soundcard (which I'd like to have default) and a TV-tuner which can also produce sound. After every boot, I have to find out which index each soundcard has been assigned, so I can configure amaroK e.a. to use the right device. The suggested solution with /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base does not work for me, neither.
