@Marco: yes, when I ran first command, Network Manager is in the unity panel, it can't be left-clicked but right click works, I can close it this way. I don't have to log in as another user though, closing it and re-opening it solves the problem.
I confirm the issue about the menu bar displaying "Software Up to date". I will try with the ps command next time, I am about sure the program IS running, but cannot be displayed for a reason or another...
