I can confirm that the PPA brings the layout indicator back.

However, it brings a new problem. Now it is much more difficult to set a
keyboard shortcut for changing layouts.
In the Typing section of the keyboard shortcuts I am not able to set the "next
engine" to be a combination of shifts and/or alts (it will just not record
them), and if I choose the Menu key it is set but does not work (it is
intercapted as "right-click key" and is not recognised as a shortcut). This
section is willing to accept only combinations containing letters - but letters
are the very things that change when the layout changes!

The only reliable way I found to change layouts with the keyboard was to
assign one of the F# keys as a shortcut. This works no matter what is
the current keyboard layout.
