It isn't fixed completely, but many aspects have already been taking care of.
First of all, the bootsplash -> gdm -> desktop transition is without any
flickering if you have opensource drivers.
Secondly, the "three" stages have been integrated more: the GDM now shows the
wallpaper of the selected user.
As the initial reporter of this "wishlist" bug, i think i like that
solution (tying the GDM stronger to the desktop) better, than tying it
stronger to the bootsplash.
There is nothing of substance left in my initial report, except for
maybe the notion that the look-and-feel of the three stages should unify
more. But that's so much more general, and likely part of a bigger
design discussion within Canonical .. a discussion that didn't exist way
back when this bug was reported.
