I had a similar problem with Vista and a fresh Ubuntu 7.04 install. It was a bit peculiar as it had functioned perfectly well for a few boots, so I thought the HDD had died at first. After manually booting the MBR with Super GRUB disk everything worked normally, which led me to suspect the problem was in the bios. I resolved the problem by updating the bios on my motherboard (Abit KN9 Ultra), one of the bugs fixed in the bios changelog was improved linux support.
