I could verify my theory:
 - switched off all filters
 - <F5> in inbox
 - about 50 old mails reappeared w/o being moved by filters
 - really deleted these mails (<shift> + <del>)
 - <F5> in inbox
 - no old mails showed up again (q.e.d)
