Brian, thanks for your assistance, you were right, this is indeed a
different bug.

Folks, the camera works fine for all users of this machine except one,
whose ${HOME} and all .g* settings were created under Edgy. I've created
new users on this machine and they see the camera just fine.

I suspect the problems I reported above may have something to do with
the path this machine took: Dapper install from CD, Edgy Beta upgrade
on-line, Edgy final upgrade on-line, Feisty beta upgrade on-line, and,
finally, fresh install from Feisty CD, overwriting /, leaving /home in
place. Somewhere in there, ~/.* settings got mangled and broke the
camera import detection for this one user. Definitely a different bug,
please disregard comments above (comment#40).
