To also referance Nicolaj's post, the reason that after removing the
gnumeric.desktop file, that it's "permanantly" removed, is that the
original package does not include a .desktop file to begin with.

Not sure if this by design or what since it's a gui application, why the
package does not include a .desktop file.

A copy of gnumeric.desktop resides in /usr/share/app-install/desktop ,
and remains there after removing gnumeric, and manually removing the
gnumeric.desktop file in the workaround above, so if you want to
reinstall, just copy it from there. I don't know if the ubuntu package
is trying to copy that file from /usr/share/app-install/desktop to
/usr/share/applications upon a reinstall, but it doesn't happen. I only
wonder that because the package doesn't include a .desktop file to being
with.
