Hi Ernst,
I just tried to reproduce this in a clean chroot. I installed precise and
kubuntu-desktop there and then added precise-{security,updates} and ran:
# unattended-upgrade --debug --minimal_upgrade_steps
but I did not get any removals there.
If you still have /var/log/apt/history.log that might be helpful.
