Installing the official drivers tends to be a one way thing. Once the official
drivers are installed files can wind up being changed that then prevent the
Ubuntu NVIDIA binary drivers from working again. Getting back the system back
to a state where the Ubuntu NVIDIA binary drivers do work is often very hard
because of the manual changes made (and the process of reverting the official
drivers beyond the remit of the launchpad bug area). Left over pieces of the
official binary drivers may also explain the "NVRM: RM/client version
mismatch!!" error message you gave. As mentioned before
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14 and
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/communitysupport are the places to go for support
now you've switched to the official drivers and be aware of the drawbacks
mentioned in the "Kernel and Mesa Updates" section of
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual . Good luck!
Closing report.
