I tested Unity on old hardware (Pentium 4, Intel 82865G), using the workaround 
in comment #24:
It is so slow there is no thought of using it. It takes seconds until the dash 
even opens, and 10-20 seconds more, until it displays any icons.
This system was very well usable with Unity 2d. 

If this is the performance users of older hardware get from quantal,
there *will* be a public relations problem. Performance must be
drastically improved.
