Affects me as well, except my machine is not a laptop, but a Desktop machine I built. I thought I might have a hardware problem at first, but after seeing this bug report, it appears I might not.
Essentially, I get the same problem. If I log out of Ubuntu and go to the splash screen and then try to shut the machine down, nothing happens. It just sits there indefinitely.
