Public bug reported:

Using Toshiba Satelite Pro P100-465, with NVidia GeForce Go 7600 (512MB).
2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP

After installing nvidia-glx-new, Updating /etc/X11/xorg.conf to use the
nvidia driver results in the xserver crashing with the following
information output to /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please consult the NVIDIA README for details.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

After browsing ubuntuforums I finally fixed this by completely removing
nvidia-glx-new, nvidia-kernel-common and linux-restricted-modules.
I then rebooted the machine, had to wire it to the network as the removal of
the restricted modules removed support for my wireless card, and reinstalled
the above.
It now seems to work okay.

Question is why the linux-restricted-modules that was installed by
default during installation of my system with newer versions
subsequently installed after upgrading the kernel didn't seem to provide
the nvidia stuff necessary?

I apologise in advance if this is a duplicate of another bug report, I
have been browsing through the information here and haven't quite seemed
to find a match to the problem I had.

Regards,
Carina
