Public bug reported:

Hello,

i am running kubuntu 12.04 LTS on an thinkpad x201 with i5-540m cpu.
Kernel is 3.2.0-31.

When playing audio, powertop reports, that the cpu is not entering c
states correctly (Package c3 (pc3) and c6 (pc6) states at 0.0 % all the
time). without audio both states are used.

So, When playing audio, the power consumption rises from 8 to 14 watts,
resulting in higher cpu temperatures, higher coller rpm and significantly
shorter running time.
The problem occurs with any audio application. It doesnt matter if the laptop
is plugged into an external amplifier or uses internal speakers and the problem
stays, when running on AC.

The same Problem also occurs on other linux distros.

With windows 7 the power consumption resulting from playing audio is
significantly lower at ~1-2 watt.

I don't know if this only happens on thinkpad x201.

a fix would be really great, since battery running time could be much
better.

Georg
