The mention of pipes is just because use of pipes is pretty much the
only situation when you want to type a string into the interface
selection box.

I concur that the upstream commit you found sounds relevant.

I cannot think of any explanation why I suddenly started experiencing
this problem.

Unfortunately I have now upgraded to quantal and will not be able to
test this bug personally - I'll see if I can recruit a colleague who is
still using precise to test it.
