Hmm. In order to stand a chance of answering that query it would have been nice to have seen the output of dmesg while the problem was happening. It could be that a necessary dot file which tells the system to use the newer drivers rather than the standard one was missing but without the right log output and being able to check for said missing file there's no way of knowing...
