With _either_ universe or main as the only component in sources.list*
(others commented out), apt behaves fine.

having both main and universe there (quantal Release file with Date: Sun, 14 
Oct 2012 15:20:26 UTC) leads apt-get  update to die with:
0x00007ffff7b4dd20 in 
pkgCacheGenerator::ListParser::NewProvides(pkgCache::VerIterator&, std::string 
const&, std::string const&, std::string const&) () from 
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libapt-pkg.so.4.12
