Christopher, thank you for the pointer. For some reason I thought I
should test against a mainline kernel that matched my current kernel,
but I will test using the one you suggest above.

> Could you please capture the oops following
> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ?

1) As the machine freezes completely, I cannot run dmesg.
2) I installed the Linux Kernel Crash Dump and tested it successfully, but when
the machine freezes it does not load the crash kernel but stays frozen until I
physically reboot is.
3) Nothing is written to /var/log/kern.log when the server freezes.
4) As the machine freezes there is nothing interesting to photograph of the
screen. No kernel panic, just what happened to be at the screen.
5) I installed netconsole and logged the messages from my Mac. The only message
that appears when the machine freezes is this:

  [10726.072223] r8169: eth0: link up

Immediately, following this message, the machine is frozen and it stops
replying to pings:

64 bytes from 10.0.0.201: icmp_seq=27190 ttl=64 time=0.213 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.0.201: icmp_seq=27191 ttl=64 time=0.495 ms
Request timeout for icmp_seq 27192
Request timeout for icmp_seq 27193

I will test the newest kernel and post the results here.
