I'm glad a reinstall worked for you. For the benefit of others with the
same problem who may stumble upon this page, I should report that I was
able to blacklist nouveau, and this appears to have solved the problem.

To blacklist nouveau (based on instructions from
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=109&t=52692 ):
1. Edit the /etc/default/grub file by changing the line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nouveau.blacklist=1"

2.  sudo update-grub2

Upon doing this, rebooting, and testing closing the lid and opening it again,
the following lines no longer appear:
[drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: 0x7393: i2c wr fail: -6
[drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: 0x73A5: i2c rd fail: -6

This leaves the remaining lines:
watchdog: only one watchdog can use /dev/watchdog.
watchdog: error registering /dev/watchdog (err=-16).
mei: unable to register watchdog device.

These just show up and disappear too quickly to read (based on what I saw flash
briefly on the screen, I think they are the messages, though am not absolutely
sure). They appear to be due to a separate (and benign) issue, discussed here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1970325

Since the issue with watchdog and mei is apparently benign, I don't
think it is necessary to take any further action beyond blacklisting
nouveau in order to solve the problem.
