Christopher, in order to make sure this was not an Ubuntu patch thing, I
started out testing with the kernel closest to my current kernel:
* v2.6.32.59-lucid

According the the mainline kernel mapping it should correspond to the
Lucid/10.04 2.6.32-44-generic #98 kernel.

Testing with the v2.6.32.59-lucid mainline kernel causes a system
lockup.

Out if luck (because I had problems updating grub 0.97's menu.lst) I also
tested the next kernel: v2.6.33.1-lucid
Running with this kernel, the system does not crash. :-)

So instead of reverse bisecting all the way from 3.6.2, I tested the
kernels between 2.6.32-59 and 2.6.33.

My results are:
* 2.6.32-44 -- vmlinuz-2.6.32-44-generic (original kernel): Freeze
* v2.6.32.59-lucid -- vmlinuz-2.6.32-02063259-generic: Freeze
* v2.6.32.60-lucid -- vmlinuz-2.6.32-02063260-generic: Freeze
* v2.6.32.60.26-lucid -- vmlinuz-2.6.32-02063260+drm3326-generic  Freeze
* v2.6.33.1-lucid -- vmlinuz-2.6.33-02063301-generic: Ok
* v3.6.2-quantal: Ok

It looks like a problem in 2.6.32 that was fixed in 2.6.33.

A single time where I tested with 2.6.32-59-lucid I saw a kernel
backtrace on screen. However, I couldn't make the crash kernel install
with this kernel and Netconsole was unfortunately uninstalled during
that test, so I did not capture the backtrace and (since I thought it
was reproducible) I did not take a photo. (Sorry.) If I encounter it
again, I will take a photograph and post it here.

I will update the kernel-fixed-upstream tag.

Please let me know if/how I can assist further.
