So after all nomodeset only makes it less likely, not impossible. :/ Ok, just to be completely sure about the pv spinlock side, I compiled a recent Precise kernel with just that disabled and put it on people[1]. If that survives a more rigorous testing, then at least that part of the conclusion would be right.
