I was having the problem on my eMachines E525, but the solution by
cgonzalez solved this.

To quickly recap what I did:
I added "acpi_backlight=vendor" and "i915.invert_brightness=1" boot parameters.
You add them by changing GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT value from "quiet splash" 
to "quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor i915.invert_brightness=1" inside 
/etc/default/grub file.
You then simply need to run `update-grub2` to update the GRUB bootloader, so 
that your new configuration is used next time you boot.
