I have an Acer M5 481T and I have the exact same problem. The only way to make
it work is by pressing Fn+F7 before log in otherwise my touchpad doesn't work
at all.
The ubuntu live cd doesn't work so I had to install the latest version of
ubuntu (12.10) with an external mouse.
If there is a solution to this problem, please let us know!
