Same problem for me with lubuntu 12.04 i386 iso, and indeed purging ubiquity-slideshow-lubuntu worked around the problem.
Since the slideshow is only cosmetic, maybe ubiquity could show a small warning "slideshow crashed" and continue with the installation?
