Public bug reported:

I have updated from 12.04 to 12.10. Upon completion of the update and a
restart, everything was fine. The next day I restarted the PC and it
gave me an error during the boot process, telling me that it was going
to boot in low resolution mode, and that I could inspect some files or
boot to terminal. I chose to inspect the files, but nothing made sense
to me, so I backed out and booted to terminal. From there I restarted
the PC, with the reboot command.

>From there onwards, the PC boots straight to tty, it does not prompt me
or anything. Once on the terminal I can launch X (startx) and, once in
the windows system, I can start unity from a shell. Once I do this
everything seems to be OK, so it looks like the config files for X
(which it would appear it was complaining about to start with) are OK
(they were fine after upgrading after all, and I never touched them),
but the PC continues to boot into tty.
