The fact that input method can crash applications is just normal, IMO. Because they are deeply coupled, OSX and Windows works in similar way AFAIK. If you want to more details, please use IBus upstream's channels. http://code.google.com/p/ibus/ Some interesting upstream people is not here.
ibus-daemon is like a server. How many programs can reliably use a service that halts? im-switch is deprecated in Debian (Wheezy) but not in Ubuntu AFAIK. language-selector is still using im-switch Don't complain if im-config is not working on Ubuntu.
