The fact that input method can crash applications is just normal, IMO.
Because they are deeply coupled, OSX and Windows works in similar way AFAIK.

im-switch is deprecated in Debian (Wheezy) but not in Ubuntu AFAIK.
language-selector is still using im-switch

Don't complain if im-config is not working on Ubuntu.
You are not supposed to use it.
