I have the same problem with AMD Radeon HD 7670M in Ubuntu 12.10,when i install the proprietary drivers unity doesn't load but when i install the recommended drivers unity works but i get heating problem.I am gonna wait for this bug to get solved to install Ubuntu 12.10
