This happens to me on 12.10, Empathy version 3.6.0.3. In my case it's not a Yahoo account, but a Windows Live one. Subscription requests seem to always come from different addresses, but it's difficult to be sure since they are cryptic. I'm getting a few requests per hour on average.
There should be a way to block this, because it completely defeats the purpose of the messaging menu.
