If you installed 12.10, you should check out this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1069031 Try to install the 12.0.4.1 lts version and afterwards install either closed source driver from 'restricted drivers' (the dkms one only) or try 3.4.1 kernel (haven't tested kernel option personally though)
