I should also mention that installing the upstream kernel as recommended
above did indeed fix the problem, but: 1) I did *not* get an additional
boot option at start, but rather it seems to have clobbered my original
one, and 2) whatever window I interacted with--LibreOffice, wireless
applet, Chrome, panel--would instantly grab 100% of my CPU such that I
couldn't do anything but magic SysRq and reboot. Fix was to revert to
current kernel.
