Prior to the Nvidia driver being available, logon was sluggish
(selecting a user and entering a password) but once logged on, the OS
responded fine in 12.04. Once the Nvidia driver was available and
installed, this problem was resolved. I'm hoping this might be the case
for 12.10.

I'm not sure whether the Nvidia drivers are available for 12.10 yet as
they have not shown up in software updater. As mentioned, it's hit and
miss whether the desktop appears or not but it's the actual performance
of the OS which is also a problem.

I've still got a backup of 12.04.01 which I could carry on using or boot
into my XP partition for general use.

:)
