This problem stil is present in Ubuntu 12.10, it says:

"Requested size (2560, 1024) exceeds 3D hardware limit (2048, 2048).
You must either rearrange the displays so that they fit within a (2048, 2048)
square
or select the Ubuntu 2D session at login."

The problem is that I can't pick "2D session" at login in 12.10 (I could
do it in 12.04, when Unity-2D still existed).

My videocard:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI R423
[FireGL V5100 (PCIE)] (rev 80) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
01:00.1 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI R423GL-SE
[FireGL V5100 (PCIE)] (Secondary) (rev 80)

** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu)
