this may not have been a good thing: I installed https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/quantal/i386/hibernate and ran "sudo hibernate" which then, unlike before, looks more like the old hibernate from 12.04 in that it reports compressing an image and takes a little longer to run, which further suggests the prior upgraded installation was not actually saving anything.
