To replicate, in a terminal run
mplayer -loop 0 a_file_that_does_not_exist
The result is that it loops forever repeatedly showing
Playing a_file_that_does_not_exist.
File not found: 'a_file_that_does_not_exist'
Failed to open a_file_that_does_not_exist.
In addition if mplayer is showing a file that does exist, with loop 0,
and the file is deleted, then again mplayer hangs.
