I got the same problem trying to add a 12.4 distribution to a working 9.10 setup (eventually to phase things out). I end up hand editing the grub.cfg file after running update-grub. This is a nuisance as the machine is in basement some 500km away and I have to call someone to change the default menu entry of grub if the 12.4 doesn't boot again because of the wrong UUID.
