do a command like this in the terminal: 
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout 'close:' 
this should get rid of all minimize and maximize buttons on your windows. 
except this doesn't work when the window is full screen. a full screen window 
should follow this variable setting also.
