Since I installed 12.10, the unity panel is not showing notifications
count properly, e.g. unread conversations for empathy, new emails for
thunderbird.

It works somehow - numbers are shown if the application sets it on
startup. In very rare occasions even later. However, it doesn't work in
the same way as it was in 12.04 - every time I get a new mail or a new
IM message, a number over icon is shown. Message indicator works as
before.
